As a kid, I quite enjoyed Garfield comics, even though I could never really figure out the humor in a lot of them. Whenever I tried to imitate the format, vibe, and sense of humor of Garfield, it always seemed to fall flat. Partly this was because I was but a child - so still a n00b at making comics (and at making jokes) - but as I got older I started to understand that it was also because Garfield's humor was mostly flat-fallen, not to be blamed entirely on Jim Davis but also as a consequence of the limitations of the 3-panel format.

A big reason for my love of Garfield wasn't from reading one 3-panel strip per day, but from reading entire Garfield anthologies at the library. It was the long-running storylines or themes that would really allow Garfield to shine, such as the series of 3-panel strips where Garfield got trapped in a roller blind, or when he and Odie ran away to join the circus. And with the Garfield TV show, it became clear that longer-format Garfield was the best version of Garfield.

Garfield hating Mondays on a coffee mug is corny and bland. But Garfield spitting hot takes via coffee mugs, posters, bumper stickers, fridge magnets, stationery, TV Guide covers, tattoos, skateboard decals, and suction-cup-pawed plushies in the back windows of people's cars was a beloved cultural phenomenon. Even the genius of Garfield Minus Garfield requires at least 3 or 4 strips to truly become apparent.

In conclusion, Garfield is not meant to be nibbled. It is not a strip where portion control is appropriate. It is a feast, ideally to be gorged upon until the reader is sated. And then... just a little more. Gluttony is the way to enjoy Garfield.

Thus, I hope that illustrating thirteen strips comprising a complete story makes Dickfield just that little bit more than the sum of its 3-panel parts.
