August 30, 2014 - What if.....! There've been many good points about the folly of people expecting free labor from (mainly freelance) designers circulating on the Tumblebutts lately, some of them accompanied by lovely cartoons. However, at least two of the cartoons I've seen only seem to be in favor of the opposite by presenting what's intended to be EXPOSING THE DOUBLE STANDARD THAT DESIGNERS/ARTISTS FACE but actually comes across as a blatant false equivalence that we can all laugh at (as we should, because comics are often meant to be funny). A good example is this one by Doodlebuggy, where the points/guidelines made below the comic are spot-on, but the comic weakens their argument by going for the gag of making the "clients" look like jerks, emphasizing the differences between doctors and designers rather than uniting them under the banner of "professionals who deserve to get paid".  But rather than make a comic that sets things right, we at NSFW Comix instead impishly put this train of thought into reverse...

There's a good reason why designers aren't normally treated like doctors, and it's the same reason why doctors aren't treated like designers. It's a (funny but) bad idea to pretend that their respective services are equivalent just because they are equally deserving of getting paid for doing what they do. Don't get me wrong, design work is vital to our society and should be paid loads of money (and I'm not JUST saying that because it happens to be the industry I work in) but it ain't brain surgery. That's medicine. You know, doctor stuff. There's a reason for the difference and reminding people of that reason ain't helping us none. -Sp0nge
